Among the deceased were Major General Thu Rain Htun, the commanding officer of the (15th) Military Operations Command in Butheetaung, Lieutenant Colonel Wai Lin Aung, the personal staff officer of the Military Operations Command, and several officers, detainees, and soldiers. The report further mentioned that a large number of militants, including members of the RSO, ARSA, ARA, and members of Islamic extremist militant group trained by a terrorist fascist military council, were apprehended as prisoners. These groups are reported to have been armed with weapons and equipment as part of their extremist operations. Additionally, weapons caches and military supplies were seized during the operation, the statement added.
The Arakan Army had surrounded and blockaded the five Nakakha (5) bases for approximately two months before launching a military assault on October 14, 2024. The attack lasted for about 55 days, after which they were able to seize control of the bases.
During the period of the offensive, the Arakan Army was able to conduct strategic and coordinated attacks with great efficiency. It is also reported that the different military units worked in harmony, collaborating effectively in their assault operations.
Therefore, the Arakan Army (AA) was able to launch a final decisive attack on the remaining military post, Checkpoint No. (5) of the Border Guard Police Unit (Nakhakha-5) stationed in Maungdaw Township at 9:30 AM on December 8, 2024. It is now reported that the entire Maungdaw region has been fully brought under control.
“Furthermore, it is reported that the Arakan Army (AA) is continuing to conduct operations to track down and neutralize the military council personnel and military-backed groups who have escaped without surrendering from the military post (5) of the Border Guard Police Unit (Nakhakha-5).”
