According to local sources, more than 10 of the over 200 prisoners who were transferred to Sakakha-5 detention center from Taungup city, where they had been arrested for various reasons and treated as ‘human shields’ by the military junta, were executed by the junta yesterday.”
Before the Arakan Army captured Taungup city, the military junta forces had transferred over 200 prisoners to Sakakha-5 detention center.
Later, around midday yesterday, a source from the region reported that more than 10 of the over 200 prisoners were executed by the military junta forces.
It is certain that they were executed. There are reports suggesting they were shot while attempting to escape. However, the names of those who were executed are not yet known,” the source said.
The military junta has also carried out similar executions of prisoners within the Maungdaw Township area.
As a result, there are concerns that the remaining prisoners may also face execution,” said a local resident from Taungup. “Reports suggest that fighting is currently ongoing in the area, and the prisoners are still held there. The military junta is likely to treat them as human shields and carry out executions, and the fear of this is very real,” he added.
The Arakan Army began its assault on Taungup city on November 4, and after 17 days of intense fighting, on November 20, it was able to fully capture several key locations within the city, including the police station.
Subsequently, on November 27, the Arakan Army was able to capture the military units under the control of Sakakha-5, including the Khamaya-346 and Khamaya-544 battalions, leaving only the Sakakha-5 headquarters remaining under military junta control.
Efforts to fully capture the remaining Sakakha-5 continue, with ongoing clashes between the military junta forces and the Arakan Army inside the Sakakha-5 compound.
