In Ann Township, authorities from the Department of Legal Administration and Public Security (DLEPS) under the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government have arrested a 38-year- old man accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting his biological daughter for six years, beginning when she was 12 years old until she turned 18, according to local sources.

The suspect, identified as U Nyi Hla from Kyweku Seik village, was taken into custody following a complaint filed by the grandmother of the victim. Local women’s rights advocates report that the arrest took place after the victim, now 18, was found to be two months pregnant during a medical examination, which led to the disclosure of the abuse.

A women’s activist in Ann Township explained:
“The girl’s grandmother filed the complaint with DLEPS after discovering the pregnancy. When questioned, the father admitted to abusing her for years. Following the complaint, DLEPS arrested him and is now conducting an investigation.” The grandmother formally lodged the complaint on September 6.

Women’s groups, including the Rakhine Women’s Network, have demanded the harshest possible punishment to prevent such crimes from recurring. Chairwoman Daw Nyio Aye stated:

“We want the perpetrator to face the strongest possible sentence. He should never be free to harm anyone again. Women’s organizations in the country must also unite to condemn and oppose these acts.”

She added that the rise in sexual assault cases in Rakhine is linked to declining education and worsening mental health conditions, and strongly condemned such acts on behalf of women’s groups.

According to community sources close to the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government, at least 10 cases of sexual assault, including child rape and sexual violence leading to murder, have been reported since 2023, with suspects under ongoing investigation and prosecution.
